‘Tis the season to trash religion

You know it’s that time of year when the atheists, naysayers and Grinches come out in force. And they have been busy so far this holiday season.

In Chicago, a man known to his neighbors by the nickname ‘Griswold,’ after the Chevy Chase character, was dragged by a getaway car after he confronted a group of seven or eight young men who destroyed his annual award-winning Christmas display.

In Spokane, Wash., the public school district’s December newsletter to parents included “important dates” for families to remember. On the list were Hanukkah, Eid al-Adha, Human Rights Day, winter break, the first day of winter and Kwanzaa. Missing was an obscure little holiday I like to call Christmas. School officials said the omission was accidental and added Christmas to its Web site after receiving complaints. At least they remembered Kwanzaa.

And if it’s not already bad enough that Christians have to tolerate a fake holiday like Kwanzaa in public schools, in Philadelphia, outside the courthouse, the Freethought Society of Great Philadelphia has weaseled its way into the holiday display, between the creche and the menorah, and erected a “Tree of Knowledge,” decorated with covers from atheist books, with a Bible and Koran thrown in as an extra slap. Margaret Downey, president of the atheist cabal, chastised Christians, saying that their faith should be strong enough that they shouldn’t be intimidated by the display that is obviously designed to be an insult to said Christians and non-atheist religions in general. (One might think that atheists’ faith should be strong enough that they shouldn’t feel compelled to constantly attack Christians by such public displays of contempt, but apparently they are using the special double-secret rules of tolerance. Maybe some enterprising imam will lead the charge and declare a fatwa for the atheists’ insult to the Koran.) In a brilliant display of atheist-approved “logic,” Downey told Fox contributor Father Jonathan Morris, “You (Christians) don’t own Christmas.” (Christmas = Christ + Mass. I can see why Buddhists are so keen on it.)

In San Francisco, atheist lawyer Michael Newdow argued before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals that the phrase “In God we trust” on U.S. currency, and the phrase “one nation under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance should be eliminated because they disrespect his religious beliefs. Yep, he said “religious beliefs,” something atheists don’t ever admit they have except when pretending that Christians have violated them somehow. “I want to be treated equally,” said Newdow in trying to force his religious beliefs on the vast majority of Americans. He didn’t make any case that he was actually being deprived of anything concrete, in any way being prevented from following his religion or in any way being forced to practice a religion he doesn’t believe in, only that the words somehow violated his First Amendment rights because they make atheists feel disrespected. Of course, seeing how this was argued (whined, actually) in front of the 9th Circus Court, a panel which has never met a looney liberal notion it didn’t feel compelled to make into a law by fiat, I expect this case will eventually make its way to the Supreme Court. Judge Stephen Reinhardt, a Carter appointee (never a good sign) who supported Newdow in a previous attempt to kill “God,” said the “In God We Trust” motto “affects Mr. Newdow every moment of his life.” Again, no explanation how, other than that Newdow is a big crybaby.

Frankly, if Christians are expected to tolerate an insult like the “Tree of Knowledge,” then atheists can darn well survive the Pledge of Allegiance.

Happy Hanukkah to my Jewish friends!
