Following the Berkeley City Council’s sleight-of-hand attempt to fool everybody into thinking they had apologized to the Marine Corps and its supporters by switching press releases, Republican lawmakers have decided to hang in this fight.
In Congress, U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., is forging ahead with the Semper Fi Act, which would strip federal funding from Berkeley pork-barrel projects, such as school lunches and a police communications system upgrade, and give the money to the Marines.
Despite unanimous Republican support for the bill, co-sponsored by 10 senators, Democrats, displaying the expected courage of their convictions, have placed an anonymous hold on it. (My bet’s on Boxer as the mystery communist.)
Rep. John Campbell, R-Newport Beach, Calif., has introduced the Semper Fi Act in the House, co-sponsored by 71 lawmakers.
In the California Assembly, Guy Houston of San Ramon said Wednesday he was pushing forward with a proposal to strip state funds from Berkeley.
Said DeMint in a statement issued after Berkeley’s shameful non-apology:
“It’s a national embarrassment that these officials refuse to apologize to our troops and their families and continue to support actions against military recruitment. It’s time for Berkeley to realize that actions have consequences.”
Liberals, of course, are crying foul now that programs they favor might be jeopardized. And they don’t hesitate to play the “but children will go hungry” card. If there are any starving kids in Berkeley, they can ask the City Council to make them sandwiches. The council has money to waste having lawyers investigate suing the Marines and paying overtime to police, so it can afford to spring for lunch.
Berkeley’s hippies themselves have no qualms about using children for their own aims, so their protests about school lunches ring a bit hollow. Consider these two pictures (see more at zombietime.com) from Tuesday’s protests:

Don’t these children look pleased to be part of this national disgrace? It was a veritable parade of brainwashed children on Tuesday. I wish I had a dime for every person who said they were against the war but they “support” the troops. There are no words. …
Pro-military groups, meanwhile, are showing actual support of the troops. Move America Forward, led by Melanie Morgan, is shipping three tons of foodstuffs to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Morgan, like many, was unsurprised by Berkeley’s transparent and cowardly PR effort:
“(The council) got caught. They got the light shined on their crazy, kooky policy and now the rest of the country is as embarrassed by them as we are here in the Bay Area.”
It’s going to be an uphill fight, but supporters of the Marines should stand by the people who stand up for them, and send people like this clown back to Havana, where they belong:

P.S. A big thank-you for the links goes out to Michelle Malkin and Melanie Morgan and their readers for joining us yesterday.
