Islam ascending: Muslims outnumber Catholics
For the first time in history, Islam has eclipsed Roman Catholicism as the world’s largest religion.
“… We are no longer at the top: Muslims have overtaken us,” Monsignor Vittorio Formenti said in the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano.
Formenti was relying upon figures from 2006, which is the most recent year available. The figures for Islam came from Muslim countries by way of the United Nations, so Formenti could only confirm the Vatican’s figures, but he put Roman Catholics at 17.4 percent of the world population and Muslims at 19.2 percent.
Altogether, Christians still make up about 33 percent of the world population.
Formenti attributed the changing statistics to the fact that Muslims tend to have very large families, whereas Catholics, particularly in Europe, have been giving birth to far fewer children than they used to.
Many writers have been warning of the changing population of Europe for years. Almost since its creation, Islam has had aspirations of conquering Europe, but throughout history, there have been the Pope Urban IIs and Charles Martels who have beaten Islam back from the borders.
In the modern era, infected by liberalism and a nihilistic obeisance to “diversity,” Europe may be on the verge of cultural surrender. The crisis is so severe that European thinkers have already dubbed the future state “Eurabia.” The violent clashing of civilizations has been evident in riots in France and other countries, in death threats made to artists and politicians who resist the Muslim revolution.
In 2004, when many Americans were siding with John Kerry against the war on Islamo-fascism, artist Theo Van Gogh was murdered by a Muslim fanatic for making a film critical of Islam. The pope himself has been threatened by Muslims for merely quoting the words of a Byzantine emperor, who surely had a clear-eyed view of Islamic “open-mindedness.”
And yet, Europe continues to make concessions to Muslim extremists, even so prominent a person as the archbishop of Canterbury saying Britain must make allowances for shariah law.
Is America any better off? Will we understand what the collapsing of Europe foretells in time to make a difference to our erstwhile allies? Will we have the sense and courage to fight back if “Eurabia” does come about?
Already in this country, we have enclaves of Muslim extremists who have been allowed into our borders, such as in Michigan, where Dearborn is becoming known as “Dearbornistan” to those who are watching the cultural tides shift. Or Minnesota, which sent Washington its first Muslim congressman, Keith Ellison, as part of the Democratic wave in 2006. In Chicago, there is the example of Barack Obama’s church, Trinity United, whose leadership kowtows to Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. In Oakland, Calif., there was the recent case of Your Black Muslim Bakery, some of whose members are suspected in the 2007 murder of Oakland Post editor Chauncey Bailey.
And yet, almost half the country is opposed to the war on Islamo-fascism. The opposition is so blind and uncritical that George Bush, one of a handful of leaders who has steadfastly opposed Islam’s threat to destroy Western civilization, is hated by his own people to the point of being booed just for throwing out the first ball at a Nationals game.
Atheists, relativists and liberals of all stripes will probably shrug at this statistical sea change, claiming that one religion’s the same as another, but rational people will know there’s good reason to be concerned: Islam is the only major religion founded by a warlord, and his people still bear the mark of his bloody intentions.

You are going to be proven wrong and if you believe in freedom of speech I hope you don’t edit this out.
Islam spread by the sword?
Misconception: Islaam was spread by the sword
Islam and sword
I am a big believer in freedom of speech, but I also believe your reply was too long and probably violated a few copyrights, so I’ve replaced the lengthy insertions with links to the original articles as I found them on the Web. I hope I got all of them. Anyone who wishes to read Muslim apologetics may follow the links.
Now I’m going to back up my original statement — at length. (My place, my rules.)
One key to understanding the Quran’s suras (equivalent to passages of the Bible) is the principle of abrogation, established by the Quran itself in Sura 2:106. Abrogation means that later verses pre-empt earlier verses where there is a conflict. In the Quran, we see a distinct difference between the suras related while Mohammed was in Mecca, at a time the Muslims were vulnerable, and the suras related during his time in Medina, when he had assumed command of a large army.
Consider these Meccan verses:
Then here’s one when the Muslims first came to Medina and were still militarily vulnerable:
Sounds pretty open-minded, hmm? Well, that went out the window once Mohammed rounded up a big enough gang. Here are verses from Mohammed’s military years:
In Islam, Mohammed is not considered divine, but he is considered “al-insan al-kamil,” the ideal man, and a role model for Muslim behavior.
Details of Mohammed’s life come mostly from the hadiths, the second most important writings in Islam after the Quran. A few highlights:
A further source of knowledge about Mohammed’s history, accepted as reliable by Muslim scholars, is the Sira of the Prophet, composed by Muhammad bin Ishaq, in the eighth century. When Mohammed fled Mecca under threat from its pagan leaders, he went toward Medina, but before he arrived, a large group of new Muslim converts swore allegiance to him on a hill called Aqaba. It marked a turning point in the new religion of Islam:
This journey to Medina is called the Hijra, and the Muslim calendar marks it as year one, although Mohammed for years had been preaching previously a more tolerant monotheism in Mecca. Then things got exciting.
Once in Medina, Mohammed and his Muslims conducted a series of raids on trading caravans going to and from Mecca, leading up to the famous Battle of Badr. After winning that battle, Mohammed returned to Medina and ordered the Jewish Qaynuqa tribe to accept Islam or be killed just like the Meccans he had slaughtered in battle. The Qaynuqa negotiated to accept exile from Medina if they could take their property with them.
After banishing the Jews, he then turned to poets and other people he felt had mocked him or his religion:
After that came the Battle of Uhud, in which the Meccans retaliated. Mohammed lost that fight, but he continued to wage war:
After Uhud, Mohammed did as he did before and threatened a local tribe, the Bani Nadir, into accepting banishment from Medina, but this time he made them leave all their arms and armor.
Then came the Battle of Medina, in which the Meccans sent a large assault force to take Medina itself. They were stopped by the natural landscape and a large trench Mohammed had ordered his men to prepare. Frustrated by the emplacements, the Meccans returned home.
After that battle, Mohammed threatened the last remaining tribe of Jews in Medina, the Bani Quraiza. This time, though, he didn’t accept their banishment, as he had previously for the other Jews:
A later raid on a place called Khaibar brought Mohammed back into contact with one of the Jewish tribes he had previously banished. After distributing the Khaibar women among Mohammed’s men:
Ten years after fleeing to Medina, Mohammed amassed a force of 10,000 Muslims plus numerous allied tribes and conquered Mecca. He instructed his men to fight any who opposed them:
After this final conquest, Mohammed was inclined to think about the future of his religion and instructed his followers thusly:
And that’s just highlights. Calling Mohammed a warlord is an understatement.

Something to consider:
Muslims have more children.
This isn’t about who is winning the race in the door-to-door Mormon style door knocking missionary work.
But then again, it isn’t about hunkering down and having as many babies as possible from 16-45 either.
Add up all the abortions - both surgical and chemical that take place annually - and have now taken place for decades - among a post-Christian cultures that treat children and families as burdens rather than the wealth families truly are, and we begin to see what has happened and is happening.
On another forum there is a poster who keeps asking “why is Islam more attractive than Catholicism?” which to me was like asking my grandmother - one of 13 Quebecois kids growing up on a farm“Why was Catholicism more attractive to all 13 of the LaVoy children?” The answer: Because Henri and Yvonne LaVoy made it the exclusive attraction!
As long as the bastions of Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular (Europe) continues to depopulate, any group or movement that continues to replace and expand population will grow larger.
Having said that, keep an eye on sub-Saharan Africa and on SE Asia. The fertility rates are higher there (they haven’t learned to fear large families as representing a “drain on their wealth” yet) and Christianity is outpacing Islam in conversions.
