Showdown in Palo Alto: Leftist city tries to shut down newspaper

As the battle between the city of Palo Alto and the Palo Alto Daily Post continues, the leftists who run the town show no signs of honoring the First Amendment.

Palo Alto, apparently at the urging of the local weekly newspaper, which has a too-cozy relationship with the city government, is sitting back while its rogue public works manager Bob Morris tries to do everything he can to prevent the Daily Post from being distributed.

Not only is this unelected little Napolean now threatening to impound the Post’s newsracks, which are protected under the First Amendment, according to the Supreme Court, but he’s employing Orwellian tactics like holding secret hearings and “granting” the Post 14 spaces in approved modular newsrack units then being “unable” to find the key necessary for the paper’s distributors to access them.

Personally, I can’t recall a more blatant example of a city or other government violating the First Amendment. The fact that it’s at the behest of the publishers of the Weekly, which did $100,000 worth of business with the city last fiscal year, just adds to the stench of corruption, both at the city and at the Weekly, which is supposed to be a government watchdog, not its paramour.
